The Dish:

The Irish coffee became an instant classic in 1952, when travel writer Stanton Delaplane nicked the idea of putting a nip of whiskey in your morning coffee from a bartender at the Shannon airport on his way back to the States, and brought it straight to The Buena Vista Cafe owner Jack Koeppler.

The Place:

Located up in Fisherman's Wharf, it's nearly impossible to find a seat on the weekend, but if you can't wait for a spot or don't feel like chatting with midwestern tourists, they will sell you an Irish Coffee to go, with a hot cup of Joe alongside an unopened airline bottle of whiskey, which you will of course wait to open until you get home.

Little Known Facts:

The Buena Vista went from selling two cases of Irish whiskey each year to over a thousand when they introduced the Irish Coffee, individually accounting for a 10% bump in exports of Irish whiskey to the US.
