Special Banh Mi Sandwich

This little sandwich shop in the Castro serves up scrumptious, veggie packed banh mi (Vietnamese Sandwiches) that have such a variety of ingredients, they almost include every color of the rainbow. Simply a coincidence? I think not.

The Dish:

I've covered a fair amount of drag events for the SF Bay Guardian, but by far my favorite was the GAPA Runway awards a few months ago, not only because the costumes were fabulous, but also because of all the Asian food references. One moment sticks out in my mind: when Mr. Gapa was crowned and then asked, "What would your drag name be?" he responded, "Banh Mi Mi." Best drag name ever, right? How could you not want to be Banh Mi Mi? Especially if you're referring to a banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) made at Dinosaurs in the Castro. I tried "The Special," which was packed with pâté, roasted pork, and fancy pork loaf (yes, that's pork times three!), and I was very pleased. Lots of protein, plus a nice amount of veggies—so many that you could maybe even call it a side salad.

Key Ingredients: French roll, roasted pork, fancy pork loaf, pate, pickled carrots and daikon radishes, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapeños, soy sauce; choice of mayo or 'vegenaise'

The Place:

This is a pretty simple spot with the menu written up on a dry erase board, but the best feature is that it has tables outside along 16th street, so you can eat your sandwich and people watch. And just so you know, it has two entrances. Find one on Market after going down a few steps; then the actual storefront is on 16th. Slightly confusing, but I have confidence that, if you're really craving an excellent banh mi, you'll find it.
